2014 HOFFMAN FABRIC CHALLENGE

Hoffman Fabric Challenge
For the past 25 years Hoffman Fabrics has offered a challenge where entries that are accepted travel throughout the year to quilt shows, textile shops, museums and libraries.
Each entry must include a recognizable amount of the challenge fabric.
This years challenge fabric was a wonderful blend of deep indigo background, flowers and colorful mandala designs.
In the past I have always created art dolls for my entry.  2014 is the first time I have entered a quilt.
My design is based on the ornate shrines of
Our Lady of Guadalupe
that are so often seen in Mexican Art.
My entry is Titled
Our Lady of the Garden
The art is quilted with machine decorative stitches and was created in a fused appliqué technique.  I spent hours fussy cutting the flowers and mandala designs that are printed on the challenge fabric and positioning them into the shrine.
Pictured here is a slice of the challenge fabric and the quilt from the front and back including the quilt label.
ENJOY!

MAKING A QUILTED VALENTINE

The Valentine Heart
And Card

EVERYBODY NEEDS A VALENTINE

I have loved creating Valentines since I was in Elementary School.
Covering a Special Box and heading out to school to pass out
Valentines is one of my favorite memories!

These sweet little Quilted Hearts were created by quilting two half yard pieces of Variegated Batik Fabric with decorative machine stitches.  One piece of fabric was shades of pink and one was in red tones.
I created a clear plastic heart shaped template and carefully selected areas of the design to trace and cut out.
The two yards produced 24 hearts.
I cut a second larger heart template and made 24 hearts out of stiff felt.
Then each quilted heart was sew onto stiff felt and embellished with buttons and sequined.
On my computer I created a message, printed it out, cut around the little messages and glued them to the back of the heart.
Since I wanted to also mail cards,  I photographed a pile of the hearts and made 4x6" prints, glued onto pink card stock as cards.

YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO MAKE YOUR OWN!

SEVERAL ART FORMS FROM A SINGLE PHOTO

A trip to Deer Isle Maine resulted in two of my favorite photos.  One has been the inspiration for several works produced already and the other is "on the drawing" board for work in 2014.
I have produced from the photo of the three pink Lupine a large Art Wall Quilt, a smaller wall quilt and a Wall Doll.  The large art quilt was selected as the publicity photo for our Contemporary Quilt and Fiber Arts Guilt annual show at the Cincinnati Nature Center.
I'm looking for to a New Year of more Lupine Inspired Art!
